Melancias e Futebol - Watermelons and Football

Senti vergonha.
Quando regressei à escola apercebi-me que me tinham levado as melancias maiorzinhas. Quase perdi as forças.
E eu emociono-me tão facilmente com isto.

O Kong à quatro anos atrás com a menina por perto - Kong four years ago with the ball close by
Saturday was one of the saddest days since I arrived in Thailand. The team lost 4-1 under unacceptable heat to play football. As they conceded a goal they ignored my advises and by conceding the second, the star of the team left the pitch with a headache (!). The same star that would re-enter and score a goal from midfield. He celebrated as if he were the greatest in the world when we were losing 4-0. I felt ashamed.
When I returned to school I noticed that my little watermelons were missing. I came to think that were the little pigs, but when I saw the rinds barely hidden, I realized they had been taken by people. I almost lost my strengths. I came here because I thought these people were a little more civilized and after all ... I wished to leave.
On Sunday things went a little better.
After all, the team had the chance to play for the 3rd place in the tournament and Pack was able to play, which was a great help. We started by conceding a goal and they changed the formation again without my permission. But this time Som was there and the communication made all the difference. They respected what I said and Kong, our small (just in size) striker, scored three more and celebrated as Ronaldo. And I am so easily touched with this. The happiness was clear and in prizes we still brought more money than what the players spent on the registration.
Apparently the watermelons were eaten by the mother of one of the students. She has some psychic limitations. But I'm already focusing efforts on the garden that I want to create in school. I will not worry so much about the destination of the fruits but with the growth of the trees and the improvement of the soil. I know more and more that this is what I want to do in life.
Today I had the help of the students to clear the land of the endless plastic and gether some cardboard. Tomorrow I need more cardboard, manure and rice husk. Before the holidays, the aim is to bring the maximum amount of organic matter to the site.

Cor, Vida e Alegria - Color, Life and Joy

Fomos a outro parque aquático, desta vez maior.
Pedi-lhe para me ensinar a passar o obstáculo. Ele mostrou-me. Tentei, falhei. Ele quis-me ajudar mas disse-lhe que queria conseguir sozinho. E consegui!
Só me benzia.
Eu agradeci.

Evolução de jarras por milénio - Pots evolution by millenium
New outing, new auditory disorder. I set my headphones at the maximum volume, I closed my eyes and tried to think of agroforests. But it's still hard. The feminine teacher Iam clung to the microphone and didn't stop shaking, grunting or groaning. He even asked me if I wanted to eat him. In front of everyone without any kind of pudor.
We visited an archaeological museum where I had already gone four years ago, and it seems that I was the only one with real interest. I was reading and imagining the remote times 5, 4, 3 and 2 thousand years ago. The limitations they had and now in 70 years everything changed so quickly. Teachers and students just looked at the pictures. Outside, they were already eating that seems to be what they like the most.
We went to another water park, this time larger. The teachers went to sit down to eat and drink. I wanted to have lunch and paid about five times more than in the village. Here, there are also waiters with a soft appearence but ready to squeeze all the money from our pockets.
When they offered me the second glass of beer I went to wear the bathing suit and lifejacket that everyone else wears. As I was the only one bare-chested, I didn't even ask if the vest was optional.
I was trying to keep balanced on the inflatables like a child. Then I realized that the fun was to not be ashamed of slipping into the water. I came to an obstacle that seemed impossible but I had seen a student manage to overcome it. Spack, or just Pack. He doesn't speak any English, he's a big sluggard in class and one of my favorites. He was also the captain of the football team. Clever, a leader but always fooling around. I asked him to teach me how to get past the obstacle. He showed me and I tried, I failed. He wanted to help me, but I told him I wanted to do it myself. And I did it! We celebrated together. He invited me to ride the banana boat.
For the next year these students will no longer be in school and I realized how much I like this kid that always has a smile ready and that doesn't need English to communicate with me.
Before that, he invited me to a slider about five or six floors high. I could only pray. But probably I won't come back here. We counted to three and there we went. The course is too fast to understand but when entering the water I should have closed the legs. It hurts a little.
While we waited for the banana boat, some girls were in the water surrounded by carp. The mothers were throwing fish food to the girls. What an image of such color, life and joy. I was hypnotized. I did't have a camera but I think this image will stay with me for a long time. I also thought about my country. Why doesn't this happen there?
There we went on the banana. An inflatable that looks more like a hot dog, pulled by a jet sky and carrying me and five students more that try not to fall. The rider manages the happiness of the crew. If pulling girls who don't stop screaming there's not much to do, but if pulling not so susceptible boys it's necessary to send them to the water from time to time. Although I had some fear of kicking Tin's head who was in front of me, it was a lot of fun to be thrown with the boys into the water.
We still went to a market, and along the way Somgit, already after a few glasses, seized the microphone of the bus and sang romantic songs. I was grateful.

A Nossa Natureza - Our Nature

Fiquei a pensar bastante naquilo.

Yesterday I read Mourinho saying that ten years ago he trained men and now he trains brats. Kids who are always playing with their phones. That we have to adapt to changes, otherwise it is against nature. I thought about it a lot. I really admire Mourinho the thinker, but now I have come to a conclusion. (Who doesn't know yet, I resist smartphones) Unlike Mourinho, I think Man following whatever he wants to call Nature, makes mistakes. And going back to the subject of garbage, if we continue to produce it as we do, the world will be a very ugly place a few years from now. If we continue to follow our selfish nature we will end up with ourselves. But okay, the dinosaurs weren't perfect either. And by the way, did you know that if we reduced the history of the planet to 24 hours, the dinosaurs would have lived for thirty minutes and the Man only one minute and half! I already suspected, but these data confirm that intelligence is not a plus. Enough of philosophy.
We no longer go to the Thai Algarve with the finalist class. (Again the unexpected). There have been some storms in the country, and some teachers and students have died on similar journeys. So the government banned long trips of this sort. We'll go to Udon Thani tomorrow and be back on the same day. Bah
At school we are just finishing the scores and classifications. Without knowing what to do at the weekend, the students will participate in a soccer tournament in the village where Som lives, and they asked me to train them. And I love it. I'm already at an age that I enjoy  more to train and guide than to play. When I thought that training was a distant reality... there is it!

Diz-me o Teu Lixo, Dir-te-ei Quem És - Tell Me About Your Garbage, I'll Tell You About You

Uma das árvores abandonadas - One of the abandoned trees
Tolos.
Despachei-me depressinha e vim para o meu quarto. Para a caminha.
Boa noite!

O meu novo jardim - My new garden
Yesterday, finally, I started to work in the space assigned to me for my garden / forest. The soil is very poor, it is full of garbage, but I found some small trees that someone had planted and abandoned. One of the rules of permaculture is to value what already exists. And it's good not to start from scratch on the trees subject. I had time to make some signaling stakes and the construction of a compost bin with material that I recycled from the waste of the scout camp. Bamboo is really a magnificent material. They have no clue. Now they're all fascinated by the solidity of the cement. Fools.
At the festival I became aware again of an aspect that can tell a lot about our lives. The amount of organic and non-organic garbage we produce. There is a lot of plastic here, but it can not be an excuse. I was producing more nonorganic than organic garbage and that means three things:
- We are giving back the Earth more trash than nutrients
- We are having a less healthy diet (we eat more processed foods)
- And we're probably spending more money (not counting on the doctor)
I like this relationship: When we save the environment we also save money. I like it because it's ironic. People have a selfish life devoid of respect for their surroundings to make money. But if they respected it, they would not need that much money.
Ahead, I have two boxes in my room, and I'll make sure to empty the organic garbage more often, even without cooking around here.
I had a relaxed day without too many students to test.
At four o'clock I changed my clothes and incresed the mulch of the garden and of the trees of my new space. It's no easy task to keep them safe from the goblins and the plastic they scatter.
I heard that the trees were planted by teachers and students but they seem to have forgotten. Do you see now what I mean by putting more emphasis on form than on content? At the time they must have made a noticeable ceremony with uncountable pictures but then, they just don't give a shit.
I'm already preparing for the next school year. When I see the difficulties of my students, my will is to go and teach them, but now I have to wait for a month.
I went to take a shower late. It was midnight. It was raining a little, and on the way to the bathroom, I'm always afraid I smash a frog or meet a snake. I already had the shampoo in my hair when I see an animal trying to get out from under a transparent lid of a bucket. It wasn't a frog. It was a scorpion. Animals aren't my field of expertise but I have the idea of hearing someone saying that snakes frighten but dangerous are the scorpions. I hurried off and came to my room. For my cozy bed.
Good night!

Frases - Phases

Two interesting phrases I want to share.

One I saw: Working without making money can be a waste of time for this person, but working to not make a better world is a waste of time for everyone.

And this is mine: The unpredictability and lack of control that happens here compared to Western societies mightbe the reason why I feel happy here. The unexpected eleminates any kind of illusion.

À Luz das Velas - By Candlelight

Alguns hipnotizados. Mas ainda não são 20:00h e eu não sei bem o que fazer.

Yesterday turned out to be interesting. The planetarium was tiny but the space is always a fascinating subject. One more idea for a class.
Then we went to some swimming pools with the students. Som was ashamed of being plump. Fai didn't go because Som didn't and the other teachers, because they might be old. I just thought of how refreshing it would be, and I didn't allow any other kind of thought. Races, dives and slides. I did it all. I hope this child lasts a long time. The kids were very happy.
When coming back the music was already contained and there was a stop to go to the supermarket. It's hard to see loose little kids in the supermarket with money in their pockets. What they bring in the baskets isn't good but I try to see that in a small village there are not many opportunities like this.
I really needed to organize myself today. In the morning, with great insistence, I fixed the internet problem and in the afternoon I cleanied my room deeply.
The classes are over and now I have to think about the tests, the planning for next year, the mini agroforestry that I want to grow in school and what to do in April.
I was preparing to get my digital communications up to date when a storm showed up. Automatically I thought: you see, little boys, Mother Nature doesn't like plastic. And since I'm in Thailand, the electricity is gone. If my creativity was already being challenged by the lack of net, now ...
Today I had stepped on a thin snake but it was about 40 centimeters long. I think it was after a frog and I didn't see it. Some of my students catch small iguanas and sell them for 2 baht. I think some people eat that.
Before it was dark I went out for dinner and had a beer. I learned a new word: tien (candles). The most sold product in that evening.
It's nice to see the people around the candles. Some hypnotized. But it's still not 20:00 and I'm not sure what to do.

E um professor timidamente me disse: “Fuck you”.

Day tour to Udon Thani. From what I've been told, we'll go, teachers and five classes, to a planetarium. The buses are those folkloric ones. Girls in one, boys, in another. Tuning car columns and horrible music. I'm afraid. But as soon as the bus started to move, the music calmed down despiteof still being loud.
On the way, some rocker couldn't stop saying "siraibó, siraibó". I said it twice and the students around me began to laugh. Som too. But what is "siraibó"? And a teacher timidly told me, "Fuck you."
I didn't want to believe!!
A bus full of children and a song with loud screams saying "Fuck you, Fuck you". If I didn't like the music, now then ... I asked Som if the driver shouldn't change the song. But it seems that this kind of request is too much. They just told me to not to tell that to anyone.
In this bus, my cultural discomfort is such that I had to write immediately.
