Ainda em Laos, antes de levantar o visto e com o pequeno almoço na mão, procurei num templo, sossego para comer. Estavam três crianças monges por ali perto. Dois, agarrados aos telemóveis. O outro parecia aborrecido, sem nada para fazer. Veio até mim a tentar-me dizer qualquer coisa. A comunicação era impossível mas queria-me mesmo dizer qualquer coisa. Ofereci-lhe comida mas rejeitou. Passado um bocado, veio-me trazer comida. A comida que têm é oferecida pela população, mas ainda assim, veio oferecê-la a um "farangue" que facilmente tem muito mais posses que ele alguma vez terá. Estes gestos soam quase a masoquismo na minha perspectiva, mas sinto que tenho algo a aprender com isto.
Um mais velho, que falava um pouco de inglês, disse-me que estava ali há oito anos (desde os catorze) e que iria sair para estudar informática no próximo mês. Há vidas inversas.
Não me deixaram rejeitar a oferta. O mínimo que consegui foi oferecer-lhes tangerinas de volta.
Still in Laos, before I collected my visa and with the breakfast in my hands, I found in a temple, a quiet place to eat. There were three child monks nearby. Two, absorbed by the cell phones. The other looked bored, with nothing to do. He came to me trying to tell me something. The communication was impossible but he really wanted to tell me something. I offered him food but he rejected. After a while, he brought me food. The food they have is offered by the population, but even so, he came to offer it to a "farangue" who easily has more possessions than he'll ever have. These gestures almost sound like masochism from my perspective, but I feel like I have something to learn from it.
An older one, who could speak a little bit of English, told me that he had been there for eight years (since he was fourteen) and that he was going to study computer science next month. There are inverse lives.
They didn't let me reject the offer. The least I could do was to offer them tangerines back.
